What is copolymer polyoxymethylene? What are its applications?

2025-05-21

Copolymer polyoxymethylene (also known as polyoxymethylene copolymer or polyoxymethylene copolymer) is a high-performance engineering plastic. In addition to repeated -(CH₂O)- segments in the main chain of its molecule, it also contains other copolymer monomer segments (such as ethylene oxide, dioxolane, etc.). Its molecular weight is usually between 20,000 and 40,000. It has excellent comprehensive properties, such as high mechanical strength, fatigue resistance, creep resistance, low friction coefficient, chemical corrosion resistance, etc. It is called "super steel" or "steel", and can partially replace metal materials such as copper, aluminum, and zinc.

Ⅰ. Main characteristics
1. Mechanical properties: strength, stiffness and elasticity are close to metals, wear resistance and good self-lubrication.
2. Thermal stability: better than homopolymer, with a wider processing temperature range (about 50°C).
3. Chemical stability: resistant to hydrocarbons, alcohols, weak acids and lubricating oils, but not resistant to strong alkalis and oxidants.
4. Electrical properties: stable insulation, almost unaffected by temperature and humidity, and excellent arc resistance.
5. Processing performance: convenient injection molding, high dimensional stability, and low water absorption.

Ⅱ. Application scenarios
Copolymer polyoxymethylene is widely used in multiple industrial fields, mainly including:
1. Automobile industry
Component manufacturing: such as engine components, door locks, chassis parts, fuel system components, etc., because of its high temperature resistance, corrosion resistance and fatigue resistance.
2. Electronic appliances
Components: plugs, sockets, connectors, etc., relying on their insulation, weather resistance and dimensional stability.
3. Machinery and industrial equipment
Wear-resistant parts: gears, bearings, pump bodies, etc., using their high hardness and wear resistance to reduce maintenance costs.
4. Medical devices
Non-toxic applications: syringes, surgical instruments, catheters, etc., thanks to their chemical corrosion resistance and biocompatibility.
5. Construction and building materials
Pipes and structural parts: used for pressure-resistant pipes, decorative panels, and reinforced fibers for ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC).
6. Daily necessities and sports equipment
Consumer goods: zippers, sports equipment parts, etc., because of their lightness and durability.
China's industrial background
China is an important producer of copolymer polyoxymethylene in the world. For example, Yuntianhua Tianju New Materials Co., Ltd. has an annual production capacity of 90,000 tons and a market share of over 25%. Its products cover basic resins to modified special materials (such as POM fibers), and it is actively expanding into emerging fields such as automobiles and high-end electronics4. The anti-dumping duties imposed on imports from the United States, Europe, Japan and Taiwan (to be implemented on May 19, 2025 for a period of five years) are intended to protect domestic industries from the impact of low-price dumping and further promote the process of domestic substitution

Ⅲ. The impact of anti-dumping duties on the global market
1. Changes in the global supply and demand pattern
China accounts for more than 40% of global demand. Anti-dumping duties may prompt international companies to adjust their global layout, increase investment in China or build joint ventures to avoid tariffs. For example, Japan's Polyplastics has set up factories in Taiwan, which has a lower tax rate (3.8%-32.6%) and may become a new supply channel
2. Intensified technological competition
The high-end market (such as modified materials for 5G antennas) relies on imported key monomers (such as LCP). Anti-dumping duties expose the shortcomings of the domestic industrial chain and may accelerate domestic companies' technical cooperation with overseas companies or independent research and development.
